TALKING PICTURES - AN INTRODUCTION TO WRITING FOR THE SCREEN
FADE IN:
An alumnus of the esteemed Royal College of Art Department of Film [MA Distinction], a member of both the Writers Guild of America west, and The National Association of Writers in Education, my experience as a professional screenwriter/playwright spans more than two decades, and includes commissions from Hollywood Studios and British Television. I have taught at foundation & postgraduate level and designed the 'Talking Pictures Introductory Course' following an invitation to redesign and lead the screenwriting component of the Diploma course at the London Film Academy.
Steeped in the history and tradition of the medium, my illustrated lectures and workshops draw on acclaimed student work from film schools all over the world - Helsinki, Munich, Lodz, Paris, Budapest - and I use those short films, along with a BAFTA winner which I produced, to instruct and inspire students to engage with narrative storytelling and structural analysis at a very early stage of the program. By combining theory with direct practical application - with analysis/feedback of the students work taking place throughout - I have found that even the most reluctant individuals [most film students in my experience aspire to 'direct' with little understanding of the vital importance of script], quickly embrace the form and begin to understand its value and particular demands.
LECTURES/WORKSHOPS:
• TALKING PICTURES - 1 Day Masterclass
• TALKING PICTURES - 3 to 10 Day Introductory Courses
tailored to individual or faculty requirements.
A combination of Theory & Practice, the course includes:
o Manifesting the Muse: Small Steps Big Ideas
o Stage vs Screen: The Common Ground
o The Story Tree™: Organic Narrative Structure
o Film Script Format: Rules, Tools & Reasons
o You Talking To Me?: Text, Subtext and Dialogue
Demystified
o Small Talk - The Art of the Short Film
• INDIVIDUAL SCRIPT TUITION & MENTORING available upon request.
